GHL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I implicitly need a PC to operate your aquarium computers?

No. All functions and settings can be made via the key pad.

The water temperature lies almost the whole day above the set value of 23°C, but the heating is never switched in. Is my illumination the cause (4 x 80W T5)?

T5-lamps are indeed more efficient but nevertheless they also dissipate warmth. If a cooling - which can be controlled by our ProfiLux computer - is too elaborate for you, then we recommend to reduce the illumination period and/or intensity.

The radio clock does not always display reception. Shall I although use DCF?

Yes, the internal clock keeps on running when there is no reception. The clock is sufficiently synchronized, also if there is only occasionally reception.

Can all tubes be dimmed?

Most of the tubes can be dimmed without problems. But some tubes can’t be dimmed down to 1%. Further details can be obtained from the tube manufacturer.

What do I have to keep in mind before dimming a tube?

It is important to burn the tubes in before they can be used for dimming. To burn tubes in, they are operated (not dimmed) for at least 100h at full power. The instructions of some tube manufacturer can vary from that. If a tube is not burned in properly, then this can result in a shorter durability!

On some days our tubes extinguish again after a short moment in the low dimming settings. What is the reason?

Those tubes are obviously not suited for dimming. Either you use other tubes or you adjust the low dimming limit a bit higher.

How is it possible to vary the illumination colour with your light bar and the aquarium computer?

Up to 8 lamps can be dimmed separately. If you use differently coloured tubes or LED-lamps, their colours can be mixed freely. So e.g. sunset or moonlight is possible.

What is the reason that false pH-values are displayed when the illumination is switched on, especially during a dimming process? I have a self-constructed lamp.

The pH-electrode measures very little voltages, so electromagnetic fields in the water can lead to false displayed values. Electronically dimmable ballasts produce strong fields if they are not properly grounded and screened. With light bars from GHL those problems can’t occur since on the one hand high-quality electronic ballasts are used and on the other hand they are well-grounded and are equipped with an internal shroud. When you construct a lamp on your own you have to pay attention that the electronical ballasts are grounded and that a grounded shroud is between electronical ballast and water surface!

I have bought your aquarium computer already one year ago. Since then, some functions have come up that I would also like to use. Can I update my device?

Yes. Send your device to us, we will program it with the latest firmware and will send it back to you after a complete function test. For this, we charge a low costs part. Alternatively you can also carry out the update on your own.

Can the illumination be reduced at noon for an algae prevention?

Yes. The brightness processes are freely programmable, so the illumination can for example be reduced at noon for a certain time to 30%.

Do I always have to dim to 100% respectively 0%?

No. The dim setting can be made for any desired value.

Is it also possible to connect a “Carbo Plus”-device instead of a solenoid valve?

This is possible. Here the device should be adjusted a bit higher than in the normal operation so that the control can work.

Why don’t you have 2 sensors for the temperature control?

Due to our special control function, bottom heating and glow bar are operated also with only one sensor in a way that the temperature gradient from ground to water is optimal.

Can I also connect a light bar of another manufacturer?

This is mostly possible. You have to keep in mind that in most of the dimmable light bars of other manufacturers no power shut-off is integrated and that only the 1V-10V-control signal is lead through. To enable a complete shut-off, there are two possibilities:

Shut-off of the power supply of the light bar via a switchable powerbar of the ProfiLux which is connected with a dimming channel
Shut-off via our circuit board EVG-AP or the lamp control box LF-ABOX

I have read that ProfiLux can also control current pumps. How does this work?

Here you need a controllable current pump with a control input. This control input is connected to one of the 1-10V-interfaces. This is of course only possible if not all outputs are already occupied with lamps.

L4 shall have the same dimming process as L2. Is this also possible without having to programm L4 exactly as L2?

You don’t have to do this work - simply set the 1-10V-interface L4 to dimming channel 2, then L2 and L4 work in the same way.
